Psychiatry

The study of psychiatry focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases related to the mind, emotions, and behaviour.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (M.D.s or D.O.s) with a focus on mental health and substance abuse disorders. A psychiatrist is qualified to assess psychological problems from a mental and physical standpoint.

What conditions or challenges does psychiatric treatment help manage?

Many reasons lead people to seek psychiatric treatment. A number of problems can have a sudden onset, such as panic attacks, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, or hearing voices. In some cases, mental and emotional challenges can last longer, such as a feeling of hopelessness, sadness, or anxiety that never seems to lift or difficulties functioning, making day-to-day life feel distorted or uncontrollable for a long time.

How does it work?
The medical training that psychiatrists receive allow them to understand the complex relationship between emotional illness and other physical health disorders, as well as the relationship between genetics and family history. They can order or perform a full range of medical laboratory and psychological tests. These tests, combined with discussions with patients, help provide a picture of a patient’s physical and mental state. They evaluate medical and psychological data, make diagnoses, and develop treatment plans for clients.
What types of therapy and services are offered?
  • Psychiatric consultations
  • Medication management for adults with conditions including depression, eating disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar disorder, stress, adjustment issues, trauma, aggressive behavior, phobias, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, and ADHD
  • Medico-legal assessments, occupational health reports, and forensic psychiatric risk assessments
